VCI Entertainment presents “MR. WONG, DETECTIVE: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION” (1938-1940) (403 mins) (In Glorious Black & White/Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Boris Karloff (born William Henry Pratt) was an English actor who emigrated to Canada in the 1910s — He is best known for his roles in horror films and his portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster in the 1931 film Frankenstein — His popularity following Frankenstein in the early 1930s was such that for a brief time he was billed simply as “Karloff” — In contrast to the characters he played on screen, Karloff was known in real life as a very kind gentleman who gave generously, especially to children’s charities — Karloff was also a charter member of the Screen Actors Guild, and was especially outspoken regarding working conditions on sets (some extremely hazardous) that actors were expected to deal with in the mid-1930s.

In the next few paragraphs are reviews of Mr. Wong, the detective played to the hilt by Boris Karloff — 1938-1940 Monogram series with suspenseful whodunit — ask the question as the “how” in each of his cases to be solved — Although made up to look vaguely Asian, Karloff eschews the stereotypical cadences and one liner sayings of those rival Asian sleuths Mr. Moto and Charlie Chan and is more believable than both detectives — Karloff as Mr. Wong is still up there with the best of them for mysteries and suspense in the film annuals.

1. Boris Karloff (aka: William Henry Pratt)

Date of Birth: 23 November 1887 - Camberwell, London, England, UK

Date of Death: 2 February 1969 - Midhurst, Sussex, England, UK

“MR. WONG DETECTIVE” (5 October 1938) (69 mins/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Story line and plot, Monogram Pictures at its best — As Mr. Wong discovers, the answer is to be found in the origin and purpose of the mysterious pieces of glass found near each victim — When a chemical manufacturer is killed after asking detective James Wong to help him — Wong investigates this and two subsequent murders — He uncovers a international spy ring hoping to steal the formula for a poison gas being developed by the first victim’s company — Grant Withers, who appeared in five of the six films as the ubiquitous dumb police detective — The climactic sequence is one of the better ones that you’ll see in this kind of B-movie — but with a solid story and Karloff in the lead, it’s definitely worth seeing.

the cast includes:

Boris Karloff … Mr. James Lee Wong

Grant Withers … Captain Sam Street

Maxine Jennings … Myra Ross, Dayton’s Secretary

Evelyn Brent … Olga Petroff / Countess Dubois / Sophie Dome

“THE MYSTERY OF MR. WONG” (8 March 1939) (68 mins/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Story line and plot, Is a classic mystery as The Eye of the Daughter of the Moon, a golfball sized sapphire has been stolen in China and smuggled into the United States — And Richards, a rich man who knows a curse was placed on the Eye by the Emperor Hong Chong Tu as he buried it in his dead unfaithful wife’s heart, expects to be murdered for receiving it — Richards shows Mr Wong the Eye and a death threat note — Watch and take note that at a party, during a game of “Indications”, Richards is shot, seemingly by his secretary, Peter Harrison — Many suspects emerge, a peeking Chinese butler and maid, a budding singer, another criminologist, Richards’ lawyer and an unsigned changed will. Mr Wong helps Street sort out the details to uncover all the secrets and the murderer.

the cast includes:

Boris Karloff … James Lee Wong

Grant Withers … Police Captain Sam Street

Dorothy Tree … Valerie Edwards

Craig Reynolds … Peter Harrison

MR. WONG IN CHINATOWN” (1 August 1939) (71 mins/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Story line and plot, Watch this unfold as pretty Chinese woman, seeking help from San Francisco detective James Lee Wong, is killed by a poisoned dart in his front hall, having time only to scrawl “Captain J” on a sheet of paper, what does this mean — She proves to be Princess Lin Hwa, on a secret military mission for Chinese forces fighting the Japanese invasion — Can any clue help our master detective as Mr. Wong finds two captains with the initial J in the case, neither being quite what he seems; there’s fog on the waterfront and someone still has that poison dart gun — Karloff held this picture together and has made this film a true Mr. Wong series classic for all Karloff fans.

the cast includes:

Boris Karloff … Mr. James Lee Wong

Marjorie Reynolds … Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Logan (reporter)

Grant Withers … Police Capt. Bill Street

Huntley Gordon … Mr. Davidson (bank president)

“THE FATAL HOUR” (15 January 1940) (68 mins/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Story line and plot, Oriental detective Mr. Wong has successfully solved quite a lot of difficult cases, with his splendid observation talents and marvelous deduction skills — unequaled master actor Boris Karloff in the role James Lee Wong. Police — When Captain Street’s best friend Dan O’Grady is murdered, Street enlists the help of Chinese detective James Lee Wong. Mr. Wong uncovers a smuggling ring on the waterfront of San Francisco and unmasks the killer, though not until several more murders occur — where all the smuggling import and export takes place - is the obvious suspect, but there are a lot more people involved — I liked the realistic aspect that Wong isn’t a super hero who prevents further murders from happening and thus has to face several more dead bodies during his investigation — Karloff is terrific and he receives good feedback from the supportive cast. Particularly Marjorie Reynolds is likable as the obtrusive yet helpful gossip reporter Bobby Logan

the cast includes:

Boris Karloff … James Lee Wong

Grant Withers … Capt. Bill Street

Marjorie Reynolds … Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Logan

Charles Trowbridge … John T. Forbes

“DOOMED TO DIE” (12 August 1940) (68 mins/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Story line and plot, Karloff returns once again as the famous Chinese detective James Lee Wong to solve the murder of a shipping tycoon — As usual what seems like an open and shut case to Capt. Street (Grant Withers) quickly becomes a web of deceit, lies and murder! — Karloff is, of course, great as Wong. I loved his entrances from the most unlikely places, such as windows or fire escapes — Thus far, Shipping magnate Cyrus Wentworth, downcast over a disaster to his ocean liner ‘Wentworth Castle’ (carrying, oddly enough, an illicit shipment of Chinese bonds) is shot in his office — What has at the very moment of kicking out his daughter’s fiance Dick Fleming to do with this case — Of course, Captain Street arrests Dick, but reporter Bobbie Logan, the attractive thorn in Street’s side, is so convinced he’s wrong that she enlists the help of detective James Lee Wong to find the real killer — What unfolds later in the film is quite a mystery in itself.

the cast includes:

Boris Karloff … James Lee Wong

Marjorie Reynolds … Roberta ‘Bobbie’ Logan

Grant Withers … Capt. William ‘Bill’ Street (Homicide Squad)

William Stelling … Dick Fleming

Catherine Craig … Cynthia Wentworth

Guy Usher … Paul Fleming (Dick’s father)

Henry Brandon … Victor ‘Vic’ Martin (attorney)

“PHANTOM OF CHINATOWN” (18 November 1940) (62 mins/B&W) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) — Story line and plot, Detective James Lee Wong (Keye Luke) is on the scene as archeologist Dr. John Benton, recently returned from an expedition in China where a valuable ancient scroll was recovered, is murdered while giving a lecture on the expedition — Key Luke is handsome, charming, dashing, brave and clever as James Lee Wong, and he meets his perfect match in Lotus Long, the mysterious Chinese secretary of a famous Anglo-American archaeologist.— Luke shows his feelings for Long with his eyes and smile. Lee Tung Foo also deserves mention in a fun turn as Wong’s servant.

the cast includes:

Keye Luke … James Lee ‘Jimmy’ Wong

Grant Withers … Police Captain Street

Lotus Long … Win Lee, Benton’s Secretary

Lee Tung Foo … Foo, Jimmy’s Cook

Charles F. Miller … Dr. John Benton / Cyrus Benton in Newspaper (as Charles Miller)

Huntley Gordon … Dr. Norman Wilkes

When a shipping magnate is found murdered in a locked room, the famous Chinese detective James Lee Wong goes to work find the killer and the seemingly impossible method of murder. Monogram Studios was obviously capitolizing on the success of 20th Century Fox’s Charlie Chan and Mr. Moto films when they decided to make this film, but had the good sense to hire Boris Karloff, who brought his usual polish and charm to the role of Mr. Wong. Monogram, one the so-called “poverty row” studios, thought enough of Karloff (and the film) to give him a strong supporting cast and an intriguing mystery story to work with. The result is no classic, but still a very entertaining film that proved Karloff was much more than just a “boogeyman.”By the way, the plot was good enough that, several years later, Monogram reused it for one of THEIR Charlie Chan films!

Typical of Gaidays’ work, this film delivers pure, lighthearted fun. Even the bad guys get the laughs and the viewers sympathy (pity?). The script is loaded with good one liners, and even the ones that refer to Soviet era life situations are well understood by most westerners. The acting is easy and well done. Even the subtitles are pretty fine. It’s more like slapstick with a plot, but if you really hate that type of comedy, stay away from Leonids’ films. On the other hand, if this type of film appeals to you, you are in for a treat.

This movie is just so great. It’s witty, funny, clever, and full of classic characters. Even my husband, who doesn’t speak any Russian found this one hilariuos. The translation in the subtitles truly showed the movie’s meaning. Although, it is hard to translate a truly Georgian Accent!

In 1964 director/producer Stanley Kubrick created the nuclear war comedic masterpiece “Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love The Bomb”. He followed that with the science fiction masterpiece “2001: A Space Oddysee”. Stanley Kubrick would reach his creative peak with his next film. An Adaption of Anothony Burgess’novel “A Clockwork Orange.” Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange is one of those films that you will either love or hate. The film centers around the character of Alexander DeLarge (played to perfection by Malcolm McDowell) a 15 year old “droog” who with his friends Pete (Michael Tarn), Georgie (James Marcus), and Dim (Warren Clarke) drink Milk Laced with drugs at the local “Milkbar” and then go out on the town at night, doing horrible things to people. During one incident Alex is captured and taken to prison. He finds out about a treatment that can get him of prison. He goes through with the treatment (which will make him sick when he attempts to commit an act of violence), is released from prison and thrown back into the world, unable to defend himself. Out of all the things that make this movie great, the number one element is the performance of Malcolm McDowell as Alex. The entire movie revolves around him so if McDowell’s performance isn’t top notch then the movie isn’t top notch. McDowell was in his late twenties when he made this movie. In the novel Alex is 15 years old. So although being much older then his character McDowell plays the adventureous youth wonderfully. Suprisingly McDowell was not nominated for an Academy Award. Another really strong element is the music. Never in my life have I seen a movie (non musical) where the music plays such an important role in a film. Gioacchino Rossini’s “The Thieving Magpie” during the fight scence against the rival droogs. “The William Tell Overture” played 5 times too fast during the orgy scene and the use of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s “Symphony no. 9″ are just a few examples of how music plays an important role in this film. As far as things being wrong with the movie. The only real thing is the lack of any real supporting cast. Sure there are a few standout performances. Particularily James Marcus as Georgie and in no means are the rest of the supporting cast bad actors. There just isn’t a real supporing cast there. But McDowell’s performace makes up for it. This film get’s 5 stars because of 3 things. Number one is the performance of Malcolm McDowell. Number two is the use of music in such a different and unique way and number three is the originality of it. This movie came out in 1971 and I haven’t seen any movie like it that came out before or since then. A Clockwork Orange was nominated for several Academy Awards including “best picture” and “best director” but it lost in all categories to William Friedkin’s “The French Connection”

In which high government officials are seen as the moral equivalents of street thugs (just better at p.r.), demonstrating that nothing has changed in 35 years.

The HD transfer is spectacular. This is how I remember the movie upon its opening in 1971. Pristine, startling, amazing.

Repeated viewings over the years of worn-out circuit prints, VHS and standard-def DVD had dimmed the movie’s capacity to astonish. Now, in HD, the luminous brilliance, texture and color of the images are restored, and the richness of the images makes a tremendous difference to the film’s impact. The sound is also excellent — certainly superior to the original theatrical release in the days of optical soundtracks.

In addition to the beauty of the Hi-Def picture, this is worth owning because (at last) it is a close approximation of the original theatrical aspect ratio (screen shape); the theatrical presentation being, after all, the venue for which Kubrick composed his shots. (Ignore those who claim he meant this film to be seen in full-frame 1.33:1, as in all the previous home video releases. He clearly created it to be seen in theaters, and in theaters he had the image matted to 1.66:1, which is very close to the aspect-ratio of this HD DVD.)

Buy it; watch it on your big-screen 1080 HDTV in a dark room, uninterrupted. Real horrorshow!

This is a 2-disc “Special Edition,” with the same extras as the standard-def DVD in the new (2007) boxed set: commentaries, trailer, new interviews with Wm. Friedkin, Sydney Pollack, Malcolm McDowell, Wendy Carlos, Mrs. Kubrick, others.

Then hope for a speedy HD release of “Barry Lyndon” (1975), Kubrick’s underappreciated masterpiece following “A Clockwork Orange,” which will also benefit greatly from High-Definition.

Everyone knows the film and loves it, that’s why we’re here checking it out on this page. But what about this DVD package? If you look at the price, you have to question is it really worth it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Help!! Click Here

When I first read about the Deluxe Edition, I thought the price would be around $50 like most other Deluxe Edition DVDs out there. At $95, this is way too much for what they’re offering. Yes, you get all this:

- a reproduction of Richard Lester s original annotated script

Buy,Download, Or Stream Help!! Click Here

- 8 lobby cards

- poster

- 60-page book with rarely seen photographs and production notes from the movie

… but unless they are signed by at least one Beatle, I wouldn’t pay that much. Yes, Richard Lester’s annotated script is great, but wait awhile and you’ll probably find a reproduction online sometime. The lobby cards and poster are great, but those are not the main reasons for the price inflation. The 60 page book would seem to be the main reason for the price hike, but look at other Beatles books out there. The paperback version of The Beatles Anthology has 368 pages, weighs 2.2 pounds, and has over 1,300 photographs. The price? LESS THAN A THIRD of what this Deluxe Edition of Help is going for.

Yes, all these extras are nice, but it’s not worth the price, and I’m a huge Beatles nut who buys everything they make. At this moment, I’m going to buy the regular edition which has been restored with great picture and a 5.1 soundtrack. Plus, the second disk has great extras (could be better if they had Paul or Ringo commenting) that will suffice. Especially for the price.

Drop the price on this Deluxe Edition, guys. If you do that, people will buy.

This was the first Beatles film I saw. From the first minutes of the film I was hooked! I became an instant Beatle fan.

A religious cult is after Ringo because he is in possession of thier sacrificial ring. There are several failed attempts to obtain the ring: stealing it at night as he sleeps, grabbing it when he posts a letter, the elevator scene, getting the ring at a restaurant and even sawing around his drum set so he will fall through to the basement as the Beatles record “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”. Despite these failures, Clang (Leo McKern), the cult leader, is more determined than ever to get the ring from Ringo!

Ahme (wonderfully played by Eleanor Braun), a priestess of the cult is secretly working with the Beatles to keep them out of harms way.

Added to the mix are two bumbling scientists Professor Foot and Algernon (Victor Spinetti and Roy Kinnear respectively), and a Scotland Yard superintendent played by Patrick Cargill. To Cargill everything is “famous” (the famous Ringo, famous Beatles, famous plan).

John, Paul, George and Ringo are all charming as ever. The settings run from England, to the ski slopes of Austria to the Bahamas.

There are so many funny things in this movie that you can’t just watch it one time and catch them all.

The soundtrack to this movie is awesome: “Help!”, “The Night Before”, “I Need You”, “Another Girl”, “You’re Gonna Lose That Girl”, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”, “She’s A Woman” and “Ticket To Ride”.

It’s such a shame that MPI is no longer producing this movie. I truly hope another distributor will be able to gain the rights so it will once again be available.

It is well worth the trouble of hunting a copy of this movie down because everything about it is timeless.

I got this in the mail the other day, and what a great set! For the price it costs to buy “Plan 9 From Outer Space” and “Bride of the Monster” together, you get ALL the films of Ed Wood — minus the pornographic ones he slunk down to making at the end of his career — in one convenient box. (Note: These are NOT newly rereleased DVDs, just the same ones from Image Entertainment all bundled together at a low price.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Ed Wood Box! Click Here

Ed Wood is labeled the “Worst Director of All Time”, but that really isn’t true. These movies not only feature Bela Lugosi in his final roles, but they are also great entertainment in a “so bad it’s good” kind of way. For a movie to be the worst movie of all time, it can’t have any entertainment value whatsoever. I’d rather watch an Ed Wood movie than a Freddie Prinze Jr. movie any day.

The picture on these DVDs is grainy, and that can be a good or a bad thing depending on who you are. For me, it’s a good thing because it helps to hide some of the weaker special effects.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Ed Wood Box! Click Here

Amazon.com doesn’t list the special features, so I will list them for you: theatrical trailers for “Glen or Glenda”, “Bride of the Monster”, and “Plan 9″; FLYING SAUCERS OVER HOLLYWOOD — the excellent two-hour retrospective documentary about the making of Plan 9. And you get a bonus DVD, “The Haunted World of Edward D. Wood, Jr.”, containing audio commentary by Bela Lugosi Jr., “A&E Biography”’s interview with Brett Thompson and Mike Gabriel, the Sci Fi Channel’s news coverage of the world premiere, a collection of outtakes and behind the scenes footage, films of the Ed Wood Reunion at the Palm Springs Film Festival and the biggest Wood parade at the Hollywood premiere, galleries, and Ed Wood’s rarely seen 23-minute first film CROSSROADS OF LAREDO.

P.S. As of this review, Amazon.com says it will take two to four weeks for this item to ship. That’s ridiculous. I ordered this set from another online retailer, and I got it three days later.

This set is just about perfect, even more so when compared to the previously-released, “Worst of Ed Wood” box set, this set fixes everything that was wrong with that one.. firstly, the name of that other set, which always just rubbed me the wrong way.. sure, they’re “bad” films, but they’re also some of the most entertaining things you’ll ever sit through, and whether they’re entertaining in the way Ed intended or not, he is the one who made the films, and now this DVD company is making money off his work, so it just seems really wrong for them to have a slam like that in the actual title of the box.

From the packaging– pink angora with octopus tentacles– to the extras, this set is what that other set should have been, and at about half the price! The sixth disk includes a very informative documentary, but not just that, it has a huge amount of special features, including commentary on the documentary and Ed’s long unavailable first short film, and commentary on that too.. and galleries of additional archive footage, etc.. This is truly a special-edition kind of treatment, and not at all what you’d expect for DVD’s of this particular kind of film. Then there is a second 2-hour documentary on the Plan 9 disk.. this documentary was the only special feature on the previous box, and if you watched it by itself you would probably get the feeling that it’s just scratching the surface.. but now in this new box set it provides a perfect companion to the other full documentary.. the two of them together truly make a worth-while viewing experience, because they each often tell opposite versions of the stories of Ed’s life, and interview different people at different points in their lives.. Watching the two of them together, in combination with Tim Burton’s Ed Wood film, you can really start to form your own opinions on Wood in an informed manner, rather than just spitting back one other person’s views.. All together these features give you depth rarely seen even on big-budget special editions of major films.

And, maybe more importantly than all of that, this film includes the 5th of Ed’s “major films”– The unofficial sequel to “Bride of the Monster”.. the film never released in Ed’s lifetime because he didn’t have the money to get it developed: “Night of the Ghouls”. Without that film, the other box set was just kinda incomplete. I’m totally happy with this package.. can’t think of anything bad to say about it, except that I feel kinda sorry for the people who paid $90 to get that other box set. Oh well, live and learn.. don’t feel bitter.. get this one too. And while you’re at it, grab Tim Burton’s Ed Wood.. which is really a great film in it’s own way, and a very good DVD edition, and long over-due for release on the format.

And remember: future events such as these may affect YOU in the future.

The Bourne Ultimatum (Widescreen Edition) and Minority Report (Widescreen Edition) both produced similar moments which I really dug, in which a near omniscient character guides his/her fleeing companion and does so with such exquisite timing and pinpoint accuracy that capture is thereby avoided (Jason Bourne in one film, that psychic chick in the other). EAGLE EYE is one extended version of these two moments, and, guess what, it doesn’t get old.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eagle Eye! Click Here

I guess this could happen, government voyeurism, what with how advanced technology’s gotten. In fact, I’ve no doubt this is happening right now. EAGLE EYE presents a twisty plot, the soup of which blends Big Brother paranoia, the techno thriller, the shadow of terrorism, a whiff of Skynet, and the classic man on the run theme. EAGLE EYE tells of two strangers - Jerry Shaw, the slacker copy boy (excuse me, “copy associate”) from Copy Cabana and Rachel, the stressed single mom/paralegal - suddenly flung together by a mysterious (and dang pushy) female who gives them brisk instructions over their cell phones, forcing them to frenetically run and jump around, drive like they’ve got to use the bathroom, hold up a pair of security guards for a briefcase (of which contents are a letdown, by the way), and even sneak onboard a military cargo plane. And those are just for starters…

The most intriguing part of the film, for me, was learning what was up with the voicy voice, who’s cornered Jerry by framing him as a terrorist and cornered Rachel by threatening to kill her son. Much of the suspense leaks out once the film drops the 411 on the cell phone taskmaster. EAGLE EYE is escapist cinema which may have started out intending to make some sort of significant political and social statement but then kind of shrugged it off halfway thru the film. There’s no dearth of far-fetched moments (like, on the train, where there just happened to be a conveniently snoozing stranger with a celly sitting right across from Shia or Rachel being so out-of-the-blue capable with a firearm). But the third act really goes ape-shiznit with the preposterous as the Big Bad’s plans coalesce and imperil the nation’s highest offices. The film’s big crescendo echoes the climax scene from Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eagle Eye! Click Here

Will Smith’s ENEMY OF THE STATE and the Bourne series have already demonstrated that the government can check up on us by accessing security, surveillance, and traffic cameras, as well as cell phones. EAGLE EYE one-ups these films by featuring an antagonist who is more far reaching, more omnipresent. The voice not only can track any person anytime, anywhere, by tapping into the nation’s electronic data grid, but she can remotely control stop lights, steer elevated trains, set off power lines, and even take over military aircrafts. When our heroes go on the run (and don’t really have time to chat on the cell), they get helpful directions from various electronic billboard signs, readout displays and monitor screens. So, unless you’re Amish, there’s no escaping the nagging voice.

Shia LaBeouf lost some cred with me for his vine-swinging part in the latest Indiana Jones flick. Here, he’s decent but this really isn’t a platform to show off his acting chops, slave as the picture is to the quick cut edits, flashy stunts and loud pyrotechnics. LaBeouf’s characer has a few moments to do his surly, angst-ridden bit (what with his dead twin brother being the brighter light in the family), but he and lead actress Michelle Monaghan actually come off more as chess pieces being shuffled about by the all powerful entity to progress its murky end game. Julianne Moore plays the mysterious voice on the phone, managing to sound impersonal yet officiously sexy. Billy Bob Thornton is good as the undeterred FBI guy and Rosario Dawson is wasted as Air Force OSI Agent Zoey Perez trying to piece it all together. Thornton, by the way, comes up with the best line in the film, as he chews out his underlings: “If I don’t get some good leads soon, you’re all gonna be demoted into something that’s gonna require touching $#!t with your hands!”

So, why am I four-starring this film? Because, in spite of the over-the-top beats, I got hooked into the premise enough that I had to see it thru to the end. And it may be loud and sometimes incoherent, but, damn if I didn’t enjoy the wild ride. I think the key is that the film moves at such a frenetic pace that it forces you to shift your focus from one sequence to the next. You might just have enough time to ponder the implausibility of whatever’s on the screen, but then you almost immediately get distracted with the next implausible thing on the screen. It’s sleight-of-hand trickeration, is what it is. And, in the final tally, I had a good time (and, yes, part of the good time was spent making fun of the film).

As for the government accessing our electronic devices, that would certainly explain why I’m so sucky at Tetris on my cell phone. Now I see that it’s the government conducting cyber terrorism. Those finks.

Eagle Eye is based on a Spielberg concept and executive produced by him. Spielberg is famous for successfully incorporating technical elements from famous films and directors into his own films but never quite developing his characters equal to the masters. Taking a cue from Spielberg, director D.J. Caruso has decided to shoot a film that is virtually all action and has virtually no character development. Take Shia LaBeouf’s character, ‘Jerry Shaw’. LaBeouf’s plays him over the top, constantly angry and fighting with everybody, starting with his father (who he hates), spurning his offer to pay his tuition and return to college at Stanford where he had dropped out two years earlier. There is virtually nothing likable about our protagonist from the beginning! When a secret Department of Defense computer named Aria goes berserk and deposits over $700,000 into Shaw’s bank account and then dumps a cache of terrorists’ weapons in his apartment, leading to his arrest by the FBI, Shaw has to figure out who has set him up. He ends up escaping from the FBI’s clutches with the help of the computer and then being paired with Michelle Monaghan who plays ‘Rachel Holloman’, a divorced single mother.

Jerry and Rachel are ordered about by this computer under pain of death to go to and fro to all kinds of crazy locations, fulfilling the computer’s various commands that don’t seem to have a discernible purpose. The computer stays in contact with our two protagonists by all means of computer connected gadgetry (principally cell phones) but also at times through electronic devices (such as LCD screens at the subway) that are not ostensibly connected to computers. At first Jerry and Rachel are yelling at each other all the time but gradually come to realize that they have been victimized by a common enemy. In addition to surviving numerous car chases (which are edited so poorly, it’s often impossible to know what’s going on), they suddenly find the moxie to disarm armored truck guards. Meanwhile, they’re being chased by an FBI agent played by an unhealthy looking Billy Bob Thornton who injects no humor, charm or wit into the role. The same goes for Zoe Perez who plays a Department of Defense investigator who eventually discovers why the computer has gone berserk. It seems that the computer has decided to eliminate the President and his underlings after the Military fails to heed its advice to abort a mission to kill a terrorist utilizing a drone somewhere in Afghanistan (or some nearby terrorist haven). The computer was ‘locked’ at the last second by Shaw’s twin brother who mysteriously dies in a car accident at the beginning of the movie. The computer needs Jerry to unlock the command and eventually summons him to her lair.

Eagle Eye borrows heavily from superior films such as I, Robot and Terminator II where the protagonist must disable the computer to keep it from committing its nefarious acts. I can’t remember the exact manner in which Zoe Perez actually disables “Aria” here in Eagle Eye but the computer ‘takedown’ by Will Smith and Arnold Schwarzenegger in their respective films is much more exciting and sophisticated than what is depicted here.

In an awkward tribute to Hitchcock’s “The Man Who Knew Too Much”, Shia is given the Jimmy Stewart part where he must prevent Rachel’s son from hitting a high note while playing the Star Spangled Banner on his trumpet at the White House. The note will trigger an explosion that will eliminate the US chain of command from the President on down (In “The Man Who Knew Too Much”, Jimmy Stewart must prevent the assassination of a world leader while a symphony orchestra also hits a ‘high note–masking the sound of the assassin’s bullet). In addition to LaBeouf’s one-note performance, my main problem with the film was that I couldn’t understand why such a logical entity as a computer would be so illogical in constructing such a convoluted plot to accomplish its goals. What’s surprising about Eagle Eye is that it actually starts out realistically (the botched terrorist strike actually looks like something that could happen!). I understand that action-adventure films aren’t supposed to be ‘realistic’ but shouldn’t they conform to some kind of internal logical? Unfortunately, logic is almost completely lacking here.

I can guarantee you that Otaku no Video will be unlike any other anime movie, series or OAV that you’ve ever seen. The fact that it was even brought to the US commercially is rather surprising. However, given that Animeigo has now reduced the price of the tape… it’s a title that every serious anime fan should own.

However, I should warn you: keep a firm grip on your ego when you watch this. I’ve never met an anime fan that’s seen Otaku no Video and hasn’t seen a bit too much of him- or herself in some of the characters.

Otaku no Video is, primarily, three things: a self-parody of and by Gainax, the anime company that brought the world Wings of Honneamise, Evangelion, Nadia and Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo (for those of you who haven’t seen it, Right Stuf will be releasing it soon - don’t miss it); a parody (although distressingly true-to-life one at times) of fandom in general and, thirdly, a sort-of history of anime from the early eighties to the early nineties (when it was produced). The plot can be hard to follow and the references to other (sometimes obscure) anime series fast and furious. The liner notes don’t even claim to get all of the references in there. However, none of this stops it from being a both fascinating and hilarious - and sometimes painful - look at not only anime but fandom in general.

I can’t recommend this series enough. The only drawback I see is this, though: if you’re a big enough fan of anime to know of it, you’ve probably seen it, and if you’re only a casual anime watcher, much of it might be incomprehensible.

For any nominally serious fan looking to know more about the culture behind classic anime, for die-hard Gainax fans or for psych/sociology majors researching the escapist motivations evinced by inhabitants of Sci-Fi fandom, this is absolutely required material. It’s also one of my favorite discs.
A fictionalized account of how the key individuals at animation studio Gainax (Neon Genesis, FLCL) got into the business, Otaku No Video (graffiti of otaku generation) is one of a kind. Originally released in two parts in 1982 and 1985, this OVA follows “city boy” Kubo in his trek from tennis-playing college kid to becoming a revered cult figure in the world of Japanese animation. Leaving a college drinking spree early one evening (I’ve got a match in the morning) Kubo runs into old high school pal Tanaka and his posse of anime-manga-sci-fi junkies. Nerdsville incarnate. Kubo is quickly drawn into their world of geek fandom, losing his cute upper middle class girlfriend Ueno and abandoning college to begin marketing garage kits with Tanaka. Their upstart business brings them to the brink of garage kit kingdom , only to suffer a hostile takeover by a heartless corporate parasite and his vengeful new wife, Kubo’s old flame Ueno!
Tanaka is sacked and Kubo loses position as president of the company, demoted to a remote outpost as a shamed middle-manager. But Fate strikes again. He runs into the shamed Tanaka on the street one day and they once again launch into a start-up, this time Garage Animes, rising to claim the throne of OtaKings!
The film is interspersed with several live-action, mockumentary-style “interviews” with various types of popular media fans, such as, a former cos-player, an anime collector,a cel thief and a garage kit builder. Through these “interviews”, we see the culture of fans who attend Comic Market, produce their own fanzines, or live in the childish world of cartoon computer porn and paintball combat. They reminisce and rationalize, to great effect.
Otaku No Video is loaded with insider cultural references. AnimEigo includes in the disc liner notes that explain all the references, a BIG help to those looking to piece together Japanese subculture.
This is a fun, informative, sometimes even moving film that true fans of anime culture will watch repeatedly. You’ll never look at anime the same way again after this.

It’s not until you are well and truly wading through the wealth of special features on the 2-disc special edition DVD of the 1947 Christmas favorite “The Miracle on 34th Street” that one realizes that the release features not just two versions of the movie, but three.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Miracle on 34th Street! Click Here

For not only does the release feature the original black & white version shown in theaters and the circa 1980s colorized version of the same feature film, but also hidden away on the second disc is the curiously titled “20th Century Fox Hour of the Stars: The Miracle on 34th Street,” which turns out to be a 46 minute 1950s remake for television that is surprisingly in incredibly good quality.

The inclusion of this feature is indicative of Fox’s loving tribute to this family movie gem that is this 2-disc release. Prior to its release the studio had no idea how to market what it considered to be an “unimportant program picture” and stuck it in the middle of its summer schedule with a trailer (shown here as a 5-minute promotional short) that did not feature one single clip from the movie and went at lengths to conceal it’s Yuletide theme.

The story is so well known that it hardly bears relating in this review. Suffice to say that it charts the efforts of a man (played in an Academy Award winning performance by British actor Edmund Gwenn) to be legally recognized as Santa Claus, which in fact he is and to persuade a doubting young girl (played by Natalie Wood in a star-turning performance) and a practical realist (played by Maureen O’Hara) that he is indeed Father Christmas. Picked to replace a liquor induced Santa as the Macy’s Parade Santa he is a smashing success and indeed Gwenn’s performance is so incredible that Natalie Wood really did believe that she was acting opposite Santa Claus.

Perhaps the best special feature in this release (in what is a tough choice given its incredible company) is the feature length audio commentary by Maureen O’Hara. Recorded at her home in Ireland this past August the DVD warns us that this is merely excerpts of that interview with frequent silent sections. But I must say that this is happily not entirely accurate. O’Hara is clearly watching the movie (discussing elements on the screen as they occur), but also is more talkative than other commentaries that I have listened to that do not have a similar warning.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Miracle on 34th Street! Click Here

In the commentary O’Hara recounts being forced to remain in the United States following the outbreak of hostilities in World War II and subsequently furious when (after being allowed to return to her native Ireland) on being ordered back to the U.S. to make this film. She tells us that other considered titles were “The Big Heart” and “It’s Only Human” and how once she read the script she was determined to be involved in what she saw as a warm and affectionate movie. O’Hara also talks about the parade itself and reveals that it was the actual parade with people in the crowd not being aware that Fox was shooting a movie that day.

Also included in this release is the 22-minute “AMC Backstory” that takes us behind the scenes of the production. Including are on-camera interviews with film historian Rudy Behlmer, actress Maureen O’Hara, actor Robert Hyatt (who played Thomas Mara Jr.), actor Alvin Greenman (who played Alfred), Natalie Wood biographer Suzanne Finstad and Natalie’s sister Lana Wood. The documentary traces the genesis to the movie back to a fateful trip to a Los Angeles department store by screenwriter Valentine Davies. Fighting through holiday shoppers on 1944’s Christmas Eve in an effort to buy a gift for his wife, Davies wondered what Santa Claus would make of the commercialism of Christmas. After working on the screenplay for over a year the project was optioned by Fox, who evidently had no idea what they had.

In what was a huge risk the filmmakers agreed when Macy’s and rival store Gimble Bros. said they would withold permission for their names to be used in the film until they had seen the finished film. Thankfully they loved it for if either store had objected Fox would have had to drastically re-cut and re-shoot major portions of the movie.

So it was that at the height of the 1946 shopping season over 100 cast and crew descended on the Macy’s store in New York City to shoot interiors of the movie and when it wrapped used the likes of Rex Harrison and Anne Baxter (who were on the Fox lot shooting other pictures) to rave about the production. Fox need not have worried though because it was a critical and commercial success staying in theaters for over six months and taking home three of its nominated four Oscars. In fact its popularity is such that it has not only been remade in the included 1950s TV production, but again in a 1970s TV movie and then in a 1994 big budget production (and clips from all three are featured in the AMC Backstory).

An archival MovieTone News reel (running 1:42) covers those awards presentations and includes the famous quote from a clean shaven Gwenn when receiving his statue, “Phew. Now I know there is a Santa Claus.”

But that’s not all this bumper release contains. Also included is a 15:30 featurette on the history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and in particular its pivotal role in the movie. This new documentary features on-camera interviews with Robert M. Grippo (author of a book on the parade) and John W. Straus who worked on the parade for 22 years and coordinated with the studio that the filming of the parade (with their 14 camera’s positioned along the route) went off without a hitch.

The special features are rounded out with nine posters for the movie.

Audio includes English 5.1 Dolby Surround, English mono, French mono and Spanish mono. There are English and Spanish subtitles.

The movie itself is one of the all time classic family Christmas movies and should not be missed.

I am, however, very disappointed that Amazon has not seen fit to tell the buyer whether or not this film is restored or remastered. They continue to list these movies with minimal information, even after repeated complaints to their “help” center. Come on Amazon….provide the proper information so we can decide if this really is a “new” version or simply one that has been “repackaged”………we DESERVE more info if you expect us to spend our money…..!!!

This is (also) a review of the REMIX VERSIONS. I won’t go into the awesomeness of Cowboy Bebop other than to say that it is the best anime series ever, I’d even call it one of the best television shows ever!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cowboy Bebop Remix, Volume 6! Click Here

While it has been universally noted on various postings about the remix versions that the sound is significantly better than the original sessions, there are multiple varying reviews on the PICTURE QUALITY. Some say there is no difference at all, some say it’s a bit better, some say it’s a lot better, all say they have “checked” both versions. Well, I took it a step further. I watched both versions side by side on an Avid Nitris Professional video editing system with high definition high resolution (HDHR) monitors and here is the DEFINITIVE ANSWER. There is a difference, they lightened it and did a very slight color correction. Basically, the old versions were a bit dark and some of the detail went unnoticed while the remix versions are lighter and there is more visible detail and color. In terms of viewing expeirience this means that a majority of the scenes look noticibly (if marginally) better. There are certain scenes, however, where the lightness works against it. Some of the more noirish scenes look a bit bleedy. Overall I would say that there is a difference in video quality and that the difference is mostly an improvement. But, even to the die hard fan the difference is negligible.

If you don’t own the originals, if they’re scratched, if you’re a huge fan, if you have an awesome theatre system with good surround, or if you have a crappy small tv and can’t see the detail in the image, GET THE REMIX. If not, while they are cool, they’re not worth the $30 a pop.

This is the last volume of Cowboy Bebop episodes, and the episodes contained on this volume are fantastic. On this disc, you see the crew of the Bebop trying to track down the mastermind of a new religious cult, Faye and Ed find links to their pasts that cause them to leave the Bebop, and Spike and Julia are reunited.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cowboy Bebop Remix, Volume 6! Click Here

The only special feature on this disc is an audio commentary for episode twenty-four (”Hard Luck Woman”), featuring the voice actors for Faye Valentine and Ed. Although it’s disappointing that there aren’t more special features on this final disc, at the same time, it’s pretty much expected. However, it doesn’t change the fact that I wish a little more effort had been gone to for special features.

The Lizzie McGuire Movie picks up where the Hit Disney Channel Original TV Series left off. Hilary Duff is back as Lizzie, a gorgeous and good hearted, but totally insecure teenage girl, preparing to leave Jr. High and move on to bigger and better things. The movie focuses on a very special graduation trip that Lizzie and some of her classmates take that summer, to Rome, Italy. Hoping this will be her chance to find adventure instead of bad luck for a change, Lizzie and her best friend Gordo vow to take chances and have fun, and forget about the embarrassing social order of school and home. Once in Rome, Lizzie’s friend-turned-enemy, Kate, mopes about being ignored by the Italian boys, meanwhile, Lizzie’s old crush Ethan scopes the chicks, and Gordo repeatedly catches himself scoping Lizzie. But Lizzie is entranced by an Italian pop-star she’s just met, Paolo, who’s amazed at the likeness Lizzie shares with his former singing partner, the dark-haired beauty Isabella. Paolo begs Lizzie to perform on stage with him at a major awards show in the guise of the vacationing Isabella, and, remembering her vow to have an adventure, Lizzie agrees to go through with it. Time passes as Lizzie is being prepped for the fraud, and as it does, she finds herself growing closer to Paolo and discovering assertive qualities she didn’t know she had. But as Paolo’s scheme is rising to fruition, Gordo is having a heck of a time keeping Lizzie’s adventures secret from the group of American travelers and their vicious chaperone/tour guide. Back home, Lizzie’s little brother Matt, under the evil influence of his friend Melina, is working on another plan to ruin his sister’s reputation, this time requiring himself and his parents to travel to Rome as well. When the day of Lizzie’s big performance finally arrives, so does Lizzie’s family, not to mention the mysterious pop-star Isabella! It’s anybody’s guess how the big show will turn out, not to mention who will get the girls in the end!

The Lizzie McGuire Movie was a wonderful surprise, even for this loyal Hilary lover and long-time fan of the series. From the super cute and perfect opening scene, to the fan and crowd pleasing feel-good ending, this was a perfect movie for such a great hit TV show. I must admit, it WAS pretty weird to see all the Lizzie McGuire characters on the big screen, but it was very cool once I got used to it. The graduation scene bothered me a bit, because they felt they had to give an explanation for every major character, making statements the TV show fans already knew, like how Kate used to be Lizzie’s best friend until she became popular, etc…, but that was the only thing in the whole movie that bugged me. It wouldn’t even have been that bad, if not for the way they did it, rushing from one character to another like, “we need to get these character explanations out of the way,” mentioning how Lizzie’s other best friend, Miranda, was away in Mexico and things like that. But like I said, that was the only part that bugged me in an otherwise incredibly great movie! As a long-time fan of the show, a couple of parts nearly made me cry, though I’m sure sometimes it was just the result of seeing my dreamgirl, Hilary Duff, up there looking incredible and doing the best acting I’ve ever seen her do! The part where she gets on stage and does her thing, I was really getting choked up, because after coming to know the character the way we have from the TV series, it was amazing to see the things Lizzie was doing in this movie as she finally found her confidence! I should also say that Hilary has really improved as a singer, actress, and in everything else she does! She even did a great job as Isabella, the Italian pop-star! There were only a couple of times where she lost the accent a bit. But every girl should be able to look that good with both blonde AND brown hair! Ha. I wonder how Hilary would look as a redhead? I can’t say enough good things about this movie! I just can’t wait till it comes out on DVD. My eyes are even a little teary right now. Oh, what I would have given to have traded places with Gordo in that movie!

Hillary Duff is going to be a big star and she is already on the bright road to a great future. Not only does she look cute, but she can act and sing to. Oh yeah, and she seems incredibly humble and sweet despite all of her success.

Her Disney Channel series “Lizzie McGuire” makes its way to the big-screen in a finale movie that will certainly sit well with young girls. It’s just a 90-minute episode of the popular television show, with some extra money in the budget to shoot on location in Rome. But we can be grateful that it is a nice, wholeome story created for an age group usually neglected by Hollywood.

Duff has a warm, sweet presence and the use of a little animated Lizzie to comment on the action adds a liveliness to her adventures. She is a proficient comedic actress, and clearly doesn’t find `Lizzie’ much of a stretch. The film mainly serves as the aforementioned goodbye to the show, and another chance to plug Duff as a pop singer, which she is aggressively pursuing in real life. Now that her show is over, it will be interesting to see what Duff tackles next. Hopefully something more dramatic.

Jim Fall was an odd choice to direct. His only other film is the highly bawdy, R rated gay film “Trick,” but he does a pretty decent job here, wonderfully capturing Duff’s charming on-screen persona. Beautiful shots of Rome add to the atmosphere and the lively soundtrack adds to the fun.

The film is a delightful, sugary treat from start to finish. If it isn’t exactly high art, but a fun teen-girl romp that traffics in cute boys, hip outfits, and loads of cheesy (but fun) pop music. Throw in some light morals about friendship, fame, and trust, along with adorable teen crushes, and there’s something to recommend for fun family viewing.
